About Our School (Click Here for Back to School Information) Dodge City Middle School is located in the rural urban community of Dodge City, Kansas. Sixty-Eight teachers, one librarian, two counselors, and three administrators serve the eight hundred and twelve students who attend our school in fifty-five classrooms. Currently, 415 seventh graders, and 397 eighth graders, will attend Dodge City Middle School during the 2010 school year. These students represent the spectrum of young adolescents, including high achievers, Limited English Proficient, special education, at-risk, disadvantaged, and displaced young adults. Dodge City Middle School serves a rural urban city, including a wide socio-economic population. The School Culture of Dodge City Middle School provides a positive and supportive environment in which the individual student is provided the opportunity to explore, learn, grow and use their skills to become independent learners and thinkers. A flexible schedule combined with an evolving, progressive curriculum and a highly educated and enthusiastic faculty allow for exceptional learning opportunities for each child.

Home School Communications Parents play a key role in our school. Research shows that the gulf between parent and school widens during the middle school years. Middle schools have often been compared to a "black hole" or a "great abyss”. Once the child enters, he/she is not heard of, or from, again. In an effort to reverse this trend, we offer parents many opportunities for meaningful involvement, and we go to great lengths to keep them involved. Our communication with parents starts well before the first day of school since we provide detailed information about the school rules and procedures. Parents play a central role in the school program by joining in on the decision making process concerning school wide issues and problems. Conferences among families, teacher teams, and students offer parents the opportunity to understand the child's performance and to become more familiar with the school program. Skyward Family Studet Access Welcome to the Parent Internet Viewer brought to you by Dodge City Public Schools. At last there is a Real-Time Report Card. No more waiting for semester, weekly or even daily teacher reports! Changes or additions to student information are now available instantly to parents and students. Teachers put information into their electronic grade book and the rest is totally automatic. The Skyward Family and Student Access System acts as a firewall, keeping information safe yet accessible while the World Wide Web and a browser is all that is needed to keep up with current progress, missing assignments and attendance information. To access information on your child’s progress at your child’s school just simply go to the Skyward Family and Student Access Website and enter the following information. Once you have been given a login and password you can access Skyward by entering in the login box your first five letters of your last name (all capital letters) and the first three letters of the first name, with 000 after the last letter. For example: SMITHDOE000. Your child’s current and previous grades for the school year will be available for you to view. (Grades may not be updated on a daily basis. Teachers may wait until the end of the week to enter all grades for that week.) Please contact your child’s teacher to inquire about grading practices. If you have questions regaurding Skyward Family and Student Access Service you may call the school office at 620-227-1610.
Student Planners On the first day of school students are given a planner that includes the student handbook, a study skills help guide, and a daily assignment planning calendar. Each student is required to carry his or her planner to class and record daily assignments. The planner is used as a communication tool between parents and teachers, since teacher notations can be made in the planner. Parents are encouraged to look at the planner nightly to verify homework assignments and check for teacher comments. School Nutrition DCMS offers nutritious meals every school day. These meals prepare children to learn and do their best at school. The meals available and the prices are: Full Price Lunch: Full Price Breakfast: Lunch Fee: $1.95 Breakfast Fee: $1.30 Adult Fee: $3.20 Adult Fee: $1.90 *Milk is 50 cents extra for adult lunch and breakfast
Uniform Guidelines School Dress Code Uniform Policy Dodge City Middle School has adopted a uniform dress policy. Students are expected to wear approved clothing while attending school or school related functions and while riding in school provided transportation. The uniform dress policy does not apply for Saturday events and weekday activities starting after 6:00 p.m. Members of extracurricular activities are expected to wear their school uniform on days of activities. Daily Dress Standards* 1. Shirts must be tucked in at all times 2. If belts are worn, they must be black or brown leather and placed in belt loops 3. Clothes shall be of the appropriate size 4. Proper footwear (no bare feet) 5. Clothing will be worn appropriately (no nudity or partial nudity/no bare midriffs, no sexually inappropriate innuendos or attire) 6. Pants/Shorts must be worn appropriately (no saggin’ or baggin”) 7. Head gear will not be worn in the building (no bandanas) 8. Shoestrings must be black, brown, gray or white 9. Clothing, accessories or hairstyles cannot be worn in a manner that becomes disruptive or promotes inappropriate or illegal activities or behavior (i.e. gang-related, drug or alcohol related, violence, sex, profanity, etc.) 10. No long sleeved shirts should be worn under the short sleeved polos. *Questions concerning these matters will be referred to the building administration. Shirts shall be light blue or white in color; broad cloth, oxford cloth or polo knit only; long or short sleeved; and, must have a collar. No form of writing or logo other than DCMS is permitted. Long sleeved crewneck Sweatshirts may be worn. Colors are to be white or navy blue (no sweaters). A light blue or white collared shirt is required to be worn under the sweatshirt. The collar of the light blue or white shirt must show outside the sweatshirt. All sweatshirts must be of proper size and the bottom of the item must stop at the mid-hip line. Sweatshirts should be plain in nature and worn right side out. *Examples of clothing that are not acceptable include but are not limited to: crushed velvet, satin, denim, chambray or Dickie shirts. Pants, Shorts, Skirts, Capris or Jumpers shall be navy/dark blue or khaki color and twill material or corduroy only. Denim, stretch knit, silk or nylon material is not allowed. All pants, shorts, skirts or jumpers must meet the following standards: Pants/Capris - Must be hemmed (no slits up legs)
- Pants are to be a tailored cut and of appropriate fit
- Cargo Pants are not allowed
Shorts/Skirts/Jumpers 1. Shorts may not be longer than the lower part of the kneecap but not shorter than fingertip length with arms at the side 2. Skirts and jumpers may be longer than the kneecap but not shorter than fingertip length with arms at the side 3. All clothing should be of appropriate size for the student 4. All clothing must be hemmed. No slits are allowed in the legs of shorts or in skirts/jumpers 5. Cargo shorts are not allowed General Attire - Turtlenecks will not be permitted
- No blue jeans or items of denim material
- Vests will not be permitted
- Overalls will not be permitted
- Only white or light gray or black T-shirts, undershirts or camisoles may be worn under the light blue or white shirtsleeves and no lettering should be visible through the shirt.
- All jackets and coats must be stored in lockers. The exception would be in extreme cold weather or if the modular classrooms require extra clothing. This will be at the teacher's discretion and approval.
Student Conduct At Dodge City Middle School we take pride in developing appropriate citizenship skills. It is our policy that all children have a right to learn and teachers have the right to teach in an environment free from disruptions. We encourage all students to be responsible for getting to class on time and not interrupting their teacher by causing distractions. An individual’s conduct at school is a part of an overall view of his/her academic performance, and we encourage all students at Dodge City Middle School to be on their best behavior at all times. Unfortunately, at times we have students who disrupt the classroom environment by either being late to class or misbehaving. When this occurs, the teacher has no other choice than to submit these students’ names to the office for an after school study. Office detention will be held after the last period of the day. Students must report immediately after school and have enough work to keep them busy until dismissed. The student will have the option of staying on the day the detention is assigned or the following day in order to make transportation arrangements. This option must be discussed with the administrator at the time the detention is assigned. Only administrators may assign or excuse a student from office detention. Misbehavior during an office detention will result in the student’s removal from the detention room and further disciplinary actions being assigned.
School Sports Dodge City Public Schools takes pride in its athletic programs. At the middle school level there are many sports to choose from. By being a member, students will learn good sportsmanship, improve their athletic ability and feel good about their selves while having fun. Students compete against other schools and travel within the state to compete in games, matches, tournaments, and invitational. Parents needing information about their child’s participation in school sports may contact the school’s office at 227-1610. The office can answer questions on school physicals, time and dates for individual sports sign ups, eligibility requirements, dates practices will start, names of coaches for each sport, and the dates of important parent meetings. All sporting events are held after school. Transportation to sporting events is provided by the school. Parents are responsible for rides after practices are completed. Physicals All students intending to participate in interscholastic activities must have a physical examination by a licensed medical doctor once within the school calendar year. Physical forms are made available through the school office.
