Good news for our English learners and immigrant students

Overview of DCPS demographics. We serve 20 Home languages and represent 45 countries.

We have good news to share with our English learners and immigrant students.  Dr. Socorro Herrera and her team at KSU have been approved for a $ 3 Million, 5-year grant issued by the Office of English Language Acquisition to support Dodge City Public Schools in English language and literacy instruction, school achievement, and family engagement.

The grant focuses on four major goal areas:  Culturally Responsive Teaching/Biography Driven Instruction, ESOL Certification for teachers, a Grow Your Own Pathway to Teaching for 20 high school students, and Family Engagement.  Each goal area is tied to current district initiatives.  This grant will not establish new areas of focus for USD 443; rather it will provide additional support in order to strengthen current district initiatives.

Overall, student home languages consist of 20 different languages and our students come to us from 45 different countries. The grant through KSU will allow us to continue our ongoing efforts to meet the diverse needs of our student demographics.
