A confirmed case of measles has been identified at Dodge City High School. We are working closely with the Ford County Health Department and Public Health authorities to ensure the safety of all students, staff, and families.

What Is Measles?

• A highly contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus.
• Spreads through the air by coughing, sneezing, or breathing near an infected person.
• Contagious from 4 days before to 4 days after a rash appears.

Symptoms to Watch For

If your child or a family member develops any of these symptoms, contact a healthcare provider right away:

• Fever higher than 101°F
• Runny nose
• Cough
• Red, watery eyes
• Rash that starts on the face and spreads to the body (usually appears 1–4 days after early symptoms)

How Soon Do Symptoms Appear?

• Symptoms usually develop 10–14 days after exposure
• They can appear as early as 7 days and as late as 21 days after exposure

Vaccination Protection

• The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) is the best protection
• Two doses are about 97% effective
• Rarely, about 3 in 100 vaccinated individuals may still get measles if exposed
• Children 6months to 12months of age may receive their first MMR vaccine
• Children 12months to 4 years of age may receive their 2^nd dose of MMR as long as it has been 28 days since any live virus vaccine

What to Do if Exposed

• If you or someone you know has been exposed to someone with measles:
  • Do not attend school or public places
  • Contact your school nurse, doctor, or the Ford County Health Department immediately
