The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects your child’s educational records. In most cases, Kansas Unified School District 443 (USD 443) must have your written permission before sharing any personally identifiable information from your child’s education records.
However, FERPA allows USD 443 to release what is known as “directory information” without your written consent—unless you tell us in writing that you do not want this information shared.
What is “Directory Information”?
Directory information includes details that are generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if shared. USD 443 may use this information in school-related publications or share it with outside organizations. Examples include:
- School publications such as:
- Yearbooks
- Playbills and drama programs
- Sports rosters and activity sheets
- Graduation programs
- Honor roll or academic recognition lists
- Outside organizations, like:
- Class ring manufacturers
- Yearbook publishers Educational Technology Providers
- College & Career Readiness Platforms Transcript Processing Services
- Scholarship Matching Services Communication Platforms
- Other educational services providers utilized by the district for legitimate educational purposes
- Directory information may also be shared with military recruiters, as required by federal law. Unless parents opt out, school districts that receive federal funding must give military recruiters access to students’:
- Names
- Addresses
- Telephone numbers
How to Opt Out
If you do not want USD 443 to share your child’s directory information—including with military recruiters—you must notify the district in writing by September 1, 2026.
What Information Can Be Shared?
USD 443 considers the following as directory information:
- Student’s full name
- Address
- Phone Number
- Email Address
- Photograph
- Date of Birth
- Major field of study
- Dates of attendance
- Current grade level
- Participation in school-sponsored activities and sports
- Height and weight of athletic team members
- Awards, honors, and degrees received
- Most recent school attended
